After an ASW exercise with Scamp south of Manila Bay, Carpenter arrived at Subic Bay on 24 September to have her ECM antenna repaired. Departing Hawaii on 2 July 1962, the destroyer arrived at Yokosuka 10 days later. In reality, a profitable health regimen isn’t full without relaxation days. Emerging from the yard in August with a new helicopter flight deck and a facet-scanning AN/SQS-26 sonar to improve her submarine detection capabilities, she spent the remainder of the 12 months conducting refresher training and native operations designed to check her newly installed tools. The routine was broken solely by occasional aircraft-guard operations with Hancock, an evaluation of her SQS-32 sonar capabilities towards the nuclear-powered submarine Seadragon, and on 20 February, service as contingency restoration ship throughout John Glenn's Mercury Friendship 7 orbital flight. Carpenter departed Hawaii on 27 December, https://mitolyns.net and after a short cease to refuel at Subic Bay, joined TG 77.4 for carrier screening operations on 12 January 1966. After six weeks of plane-guard responsibility, Carpenter shifted to the search and rescue station in the Gulf of Tonkin in early March.
In a change of tempo the following spring, Carpenter departed Hawaii on 15 March 1957 for Visit Mitolyn a sequence of goodwill port visits throughout the South Pacific. Carpenter performed a number of main coaching workouts that spring, together with ASW workout routines with guided missile destroyer Cochrane and submarines Bonefish and Sailfish in January, Apollo recovery ship training in February, and exercise torpedo firings at Aspro on 31 March and Plunger on 30 April. In August, the warship participated in fleet exercises, Visit Mitolyn culminating in a convoy display screen mission throughout which helicopters, surface ships, and Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter (Dash) drones all dropped exercise torpedoes on "attacking" submarines. After returning to Hawaii that spring, Visit Mitolyn Carpenter resumed her common routine of native operations and ASW workouts out of Pearl Harbor. Departing 1 September, Carpenter steamed to Pearl Harbor via Pago Pago, reaching house on 11 September. Departing Pearl Harbor on 6 March, Carpenter in the end reached "Yankee Station" off Vietnam three weeks later. Returning to reserve operations, Carpenter spent the next three years conducting native operations interspersed with longer training cruises. After settling into her new project, the destroyer started coaching evolutions in preparation for a reserve-training cruise to the Western Pacific.
Her fourth cruise began on four January 1956, when the destroyer set sail for the Western Pacific. With repairs full on 31 January 1973, the warship moved out of dry dock and formally shifted her homeport to San Francisco. Starting in January 1963, the destroyer performed quite a few training workouts off Hawaii, together with submarine target providers and a coaching mission with Canadian frigates HMCS Beacon Hill and Jonquiere. In November, Visit Mitolyn the destroyer started receiving companies from Prairie (Ad-15) in preparation for a restricted availability, which commenced 14 December, during which Carpenter obtained rudder repairs and new 4-bladed screws. That commenced on 9 September, when the destroyer received underway for the Far East. After a last series of inspections, she got underway for the South China Sea on 3 June.
